When Helping Hurts

Our staff team here at the Summit is working our way through a pretty strong book called When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert. The authors have been working for years to help alleviate poverty with a focus here in North America. The authors give maybe the best fully-orbed explanation of poverty that I’ve seen in print. Using a biblical worldview they argue every human was created to function in relationship with God, creation, self, and others. For these authors, poverty is  in essence the brokenness of any of these relationships and in that light we are all poverty stricken. Understanding this is key:

“one of the major premises of this book is that until we embrace our mutual brokenness, our work with low-income people is likely to do far more harm than good”

Probably the quote so far that has me spinning is below. It hurts a little because it is so true of many of my experiences.

one of the biggest problems in many poverty-alleviation efforts is that their design and implementation exacerbates the poverty of being of the economically rich – their god complexes – and the poverty of being of the economically poor – their feelings of inferiority and shame.

With helpful reflection and study questions at the BEGINNING and end of each chapter and a helpful website, this book really is a fully developed resource for any small group, church, para church, or anyone else to gain a proper perspective on the widely misunderstood problem of poverty.  I’m strongly recommending this one to you.

I’ve heard great things about this book before. Do you know anywhere to get a good deal on them if buying in quantity? I’m thinking it’d be awesome to get the Oxford Manor team to read
    this together…
