Small Groups Guy

Read it (updated)

As some person I cant remember famously said “brothers, either read or get out of the ministry.” below is hopefully a list of helpful resources for small group leaders and those heading up small group ministries and then a look (if you care) at what I am personally reading through right now.

Small Group 101 :: Helpful for any leader

  • Leading Life-Changing Small Groups by Bill Donahue
  • Why Small Groups by C.J. Mahaney and the Sovereign Grace guys
  • 101 Best Small Group Ideas by Discipleship Journal
  • Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian life by Donald Whitney (not a small groups book, but a book on what living the christian life looks like).

Small Group 201 :: Helpful for Coaches and Ministry leaders

  • Coaching Life Changing Small Group Leaders by Bill Donahue
  • Creating Community by Andy Stanley
  • Building a Church of small groups by Bill Donahue & Russ Robinson
  • The 7 Deadly Sins of small group ministry by Bill Donahue and Russ Robinson
  • Growing True Disciples by George Barna

**These 2 sets are largely small-group focused. For a broader listing, see my post on Leader Resources

What is Spence Reading Right Now? (I update this at the beginning of each month…if you care)

FEBRUARY READS

  • In the Bible: M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan (for all of 2009). Takes you through the OT once and NT & Psalms twice in a calendar year. Reading it with my wife. Also reading proverbs right now.
  • Just for me: Bumper Sticker Ethics by Steve Wilkens, Moral Darwinism by Benjamin Wiker (havent finished it from January). Also reading several sermons & articles on Spiritual Gifts.
  • In Small Group Ministry: Sticky Church by Larry Osborne (best book out there on sermon-based small groups)

**Some guys I know have like 10 books they are reading at the same time. I will be honest, If I get through these by the end of the month, I will be throwing a party. Not included in this list are several blogs and articles as well.
